The ACR Sea Shelter 4 is a Cat I enclosure for the GlobalFix EPIRB. It automatically releases the beacon at a depth between 1.5 and 4 meters. The 9490.1 hydrostatic release unit must be ordered separately.

Enclosed housing that automatically releases your EPIRB if the vessel sinks
The ACR Sea Shelter 4 is the Cat I enclosure for the GlobalFix EPIRB series. It is a fully enclosed holder that protects the beacon from the elements and automatically releases the beacon as soon as the vessel takes on water. The release occurs at a depth between 1.5 and 4 meters, after which the beacon floats to the surface and begins transmitting automatically.

The enclosure features a quick-release mechanism for the hydrostatic release, a mounting orientation that only fits one way so that the beacon cannot be inserted backward, and a built-in deactivation magnet that prevents the EPIRB from transmitting while inside the holder. Please note: the hydrostatic release unit itself is not included and must be ordered separately under part number 9490.1.

Why choose the Sea Shelter 4 Cat I enclosure?

  • Automatic release: the beacon is released at a depth between 1.5 and 4 meters if the vessel sinks
  • Fully enclosed: protects the beacon from sun, water, and damage on deck
  • Quick-release mechanism: the hydrostatic release is easy to replace
  • Mounting only possible in one way: you cannot insert the beacon incorrectly
  • Deactivation magnet: prevents the EPIRB from transmitting while it is in the holder

Who is this product made for?

The Sea Shelter 4 is intended for anyone who does not want to depend on whether someone is able to get on deck. The enclosure is suitable for all vessel sizes, from pleasure craft and motor yachts to freighters and tugboats. It is also suitable as a replacement for a weathered existing Cat I enclosure.

What are the benefits for you?

  • Works even if you can no longer take action: in the event of rapid sinking, the beacon releases automatically
  • Less wear on your beacon: the enclosed design keeps out sun and salt
  • Hassle-free maintenance: you can change the release unit without dismantling the entire bracket
  • Easy installation: a mounting template is available for drilling

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Cat I and a Cat II bracket?

The difference lies in how the beacon is removed from the holder. A Cat I bracket is a closed housing with a hydrostatic release that automatically releases the beacon if the vessel sinks, at a depth between 1.5 and 4 meters. A Cat II bracket is an open holder from which you remove the beacon yourself. With both, you can also manually activate the beacon.

Will my EPIRB trigger if the bracket gets wet?

No. Both the Cat I and Cat II brackets deactivate the beacon's water sensor as long as the beacon is in the holder. If the bracket gets wet from rain or wash over, this will not trigger a false alarm. Water activation only works once the beacon has been removed from the bracket.

Where is the best place to mount the bracket?

Choose an easily accessible location that is protected from vibrations, direct sunlight, exhaust gases, and aggressive chemicals, and where nothing can obstruct it. A Cat I bracket must also be mounted without obstructions so the beacon can actually float up, so not under a sprayhood or cabin roof.

Is the hydrostatic release included?

No. ACR explicitly states that the Sea Shelter replacement housing with part number 2832 does not contain a hydrostatic release. The HydroFix HRU with part number 9490.1 must be ordered separately. Without that release unit, the housing will not automatically release the beacon.
