NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 network structure overview

NMEA 0183

NMEA 0183 explained

NMEA 0183 standard for marine data, chartplotters, autopilots, AIS and onboard instruments

NMEA 0183 is a widely used marine communication standard that lets onboard devices share data such as position, course, speed, depth, wind and AIS. Data is sent as recognizable text sentences, helping equipment from different brands work together reliably.

In practice, NMEA 0183 is most common in existing setups and refits. It’s a simple, stable way to connect sensors, chartplotters, autopilots and displays. With the right interfaces and splitters you can distribute or convert data cleanly, for example using Actisense solutions, and in installations where Maretron is also used.

NMEA 2000 is often considered the more modern network demonstrating for new onboard systems, but NMEA 0183 remains important because so much equipment still uses it. That’s why AML offers the parts you need to keep NMEA 0183 reliable, or integrate it into a larger system.
