Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions we hear most when people choose electronics.

B&G or Simrad: which suits my boat?

B&G develops its navigation, instruments and autopilots for sailors. Simrad focuses mainly on motorboats and fishing. Both brands are part of Navico, and many network parts and accessories fit both. Not sure? Tell us about your boat and how you use it.

What is the difference between NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183?

NMEA 2000 is the plug-and-play network standard: one backbone with exactly two terminators and a 12 V supply, to which devices connect with short drop cables. NMEA 0183 is the older serial standard. With a gateway you can keep using older 0183 equipment on a new NMEA 2000 network.

Do I need AIS Class A or Class B?

Class A is meant for professional shipping. Class B is meant for recreational and smaller vessels and transmits with lower power and longer intervals. An AIS receiver shows other vessels, but does not transmit your own position. For that you need a transponder.

What is the difference between an EPIRB and a PLB?

An EPIRB is registered to the vessel, floats and can activate automatically, and transmits for at least 48 hours. A PLB is registered to a person, is worn on the lifejacket, is activated by hand and transmits for at least 24 hours. Both alert rescue services worldwide via the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system.

Will it work with the equipment already on my boat?

Send us the brands and model numbers on board, by email or phone, and we will check what fits and works together. That way you order the right parts the first time.
