ACR EPIRBs: GlobalFix V5 and V6

The GlobalFix range is ACR's 406 MHz emergency beacon for the vessel. Activate it and a digital mayday goes out via the Cospas-Sarsat satellite network with your position from GPS, Galileo and Glonass. The GlobalFix V5 adds local AIS alerting, so ships within VHF range see you directly on their screen. The GlobalFix V6 has Return Link Service and NFC but no AIS. Both come with a Category I automatic-release housing or a Category II manual bracket. AML helps with model selection, programming and the right location onboard.

ACR PLB: ResQLink Personal Locator Beacons

A PLB stays with the person, not the vessel. You wear it on your lifejacket or in your pocket, so you have it when you go overboard or step into the liferaft. That is the essential difference: an EPIRB still attached to a sinking vessel will not help you then. The ResQLink 400 weighs 144 grams and floats. Registration, Certificates and Dutch Regulations

In the Netherlands both an EPIRB and a PLB must be registered with the Rijksinspectie Digitale Infrastructuur, the RDI. Registration is free and ensures the Coastguard knows immediately who you are and who to call. After registering an EPIRB you receive an MMSI number that must be programmed into the beacon, which your supplier can do for you. For operating an EPIRB the Beperkt certificaat Maritieme Radiocommunicatie, the Marcom-B, is the minimum requirement. For a PLB no operating certificate is required. The Cospas-Sarsat system is government funded, so there are no subscription costs and in most countries the rescue itself is free of charge.

Category I or Category II: Which Do You Need?

The difference is how the beacon leaves its housing. A Category I EPIRB sits in a hydrostatic release housing and comes free automatically between 1.5 and 4 metres depth when the vessel sinks. It then floats up, gets wet and starts transmitting without anyone having to do anything. A Category II EPIRB you take out of the bracket yourself. Category I is the safer choice if you sail further offshore, because it also works when nobody can reach the deck any more. Both types can also be activated by hand. Note that a Category I setup needs a hydrostatic release which must be replaced every two years.

SART Transponders: Radar SART and AIS SART

A liferaft gives almost no radar echo, so a searching vessel sails straight past. A SART solves that. The Pathfinder PRO responds to X-band ship radar and places the recognisable pattern of twelve blips on the screen of any vessel illuminating you. The Pathfinder AIS transmits eight AIS position reports per minute with your exact GNSS position, visible on every AIS screen within roughly five nautical miles and on shore stations too. A SART is mandatory for commercial vessels under GMDSS and for any vessel carrying more than one liferaft.

GMDSS Survival VHF Radios

A survival VHF is the portable radio that goes into the liferaft. Unlike a normal handheld it is GMDSS certified and built to still work after years of standing by: the emergency battery stays sealed and the radio starts automatically on channel 16 when activated. The SR303 is the newer model with a seal on the battery and NFC, so you read the replacement date with your phone, which saves time during an inspection. The SR203 is a run-out model. Both are available as a bare unit for the safety equipment or as a kit with rechargeable battery and charger for daily use onboard.

RCL Marine Searchlights

A controllable searchlight makes the difference between guessing and seeing when berthing at night, looking for a buoy or during a man overboard situation. With a searchlight what counts is candela, the intensity of the focused beam. The RCL-50 LED delivers over 100,000 candela and suits smaller to mid-size vessels. The RCL-85 is the easiest to install because all control is wireless: only a power cable runs to the light. The RCL-95 does 440,000 candela with the electronics inside the waterproof light head. The RCL-100 LED sits at 220,000 candela. For professional work at distance there are the HID models RCL-300A and RCL-600A.

Lifejacket Lights and Distress Signalling

A beacon ensures the rescue service knows where you are, but on the last hundred metres someone actually has to see you. A head in the water at night is virtually invisible without light. The HemiLight 3 switches on automatically in fresh and salt water and fits almost any lifejacket, with rounded edges so it will not damage an inflatable one. The Firefly PRO strobes flash for over 56 hours and are visible over 4.8 kilometres. The ResQFlare Pro replaces the traditional flare with LEDs: it signals morse SOS in red-orange and cyan plus infrared, for at least three hours where a pyrotechnic flare lasts around thirty seconds.

Brackets, Hydrostatic Releases and Beacon Service

An emergency beacon is only worth anything if it still works when it matters. The battery of an EPIRB generally lasts ten years, that of a PLB five years, after which it must be replaced, or sooner if the beacon has been activated. Replacement is done by an authorised ACR dealer or battery replacement centre, which fully retests the beacon afterwards. In a Category I setup the hydrostatic release has its own term and must be replaced every two years. Which Combination Suits Your Vessel?

What you need depends on your sailing area and whether you must comply with SOLAS or GMDSS. On inland waters and close inshore a PLB is often a sound start. For crossings and offshore sailing an EPIRB is the basis, ideally combined with a PLB per crew member, because a beacon that stays with the vessel does not help someone who goes overboard. Commercial vessels under GMDSS also need a SART and a survival VHF. Add lifejacket lights and a distress signal so you are also seen on the final stretch.
