Frequently asked questions
What exactly does the WSO200 measure?
Five things: apparent wind speed, apparent wind direction, barometric pressure, air temperature, and relative humidity. All five are sent to the NMEA 2000 network as individual data points, so you can display them on any dashboard or screen you choose.
Does it also provide true wind data?
Not from this device alone; this is the most common misunderstanding we encounter. The WSO200 does not have its own compass or GPS. It measures the wind as it hits the ship: apparent wind. For true wind, you need a heading source; Maretron recommends their SSC300 solid-state compass, combined with a display or N2KView. If you already have a compass on your NMEA 2000 network, that can also provide the necessary heading data. If you are unsure whether your current setup is complete, please give us a call before ordering.
Why ultrasonic rather than a standard wind vane with cups?
Because there are no moving parts. As Maretron puts it: there are no moving parts that can wear out or get caught in the rigging. A traditional anemometer with cups and a vane has bearings that will eventually wear out, often at the masthead where they are difficult to reach without going up the mast. An ultrasonic meter eliminates this problem.
How is it mounted?
It uses a standard 1¼-inch maritime antenna mount, the same size used for VHF antennas. This is convenient, as you can often install it on an existing antenna bracket or rail mount without needing new hardware.
Is this for a sailboat or a motorboat?
Both, but with different advantages. On a sailboat, everything revolves around wind direction and speed, and you would want a compass to calculate true wind and laylines. On a motorboat or a vessel at the dock or at anchor, the combination of air pressure, temperature, and humidity is particularly valuable: it turns your boat into a weather station, and with a gateway, you can even monitor conditions from home.
What else do I need?
A functional NMEA 2000 network and a way to view the data: a display, your chartplotter, or Maretron's own software. See NMEA 2000 for the network and network sensors for additional components.
