Sailor's checklist: from chartplotter to winter-ready network

Season finale: the ultimate check for your onboard systems

The sailing season is winding down. If you're not heading to warmer waters, now's the time to pay attention to your systems. With proper care, you'll prevent malfunctions in the spring. You'll also create time to plan upgrades.

This article explains what to check, why it's important, and when we can help. You'll find practical tips for B&G and Actisense/NMEA networks.

Why pay attention now?

Salt, moisture, sun, and vibration take their toll on electronics. During the winter, residual moisture can cause corrosion, and loose connectors become unreliable. By checking, cleaning, and updating your system now, you'll be ready for a spring start without any surprises. It's also the perfect time to determine if your current setup still suits your boat and plans.

Checklist: Tackle this now

Power and batteries

Check voltage and fuses. Clean terminals and check for corrosion. Set batteries to trickle charge. Measure charging current and open-circuit voltage.

Chartplotter and data

Back up waypoints and routes. Update maps and firmware. Check the card reader and store SD cards in a dry place.

Instruments and sensors

Clean speed and depth sensors. Check wind and log. Inspect connectors and feedthroughs for moisture or oxidation.

Radar and AIS

Clean the radome. Check the antenna, coax, and connectors. Check the MMSI and name. Update the software.

NMEA network

Check the backbone, T-pieces, and terminators (two at each end). Ensure there is strain relief. Label the cables for spring installation.

Autopilot and compass

Record calibrations. Check power and wiring. Check for play in the steering and sensor mounting.

Cabling and feedthroughs

Check feedthroughs and seals. Seal any damaged areas with heat shrink tubing. Replace porous gaskets.

Protection and storage

Cover or disassemble displays. Store in a dry place with silica gel. Ventilate areas where electronics are stored.

B&G: ready for your next adventure

Reliability starts with maintenance. With up-to-date software and clean connections, chartplotters, instruments, and radar continue to perform as expected. We can monitor and update your system, replacing outdated components when necessary.

Practical: Record network names, IP settings, and calibrations. This saves time during resets or upgrades.

Actisense: your NMEA network in order

Connect instruments, plotters, and apps with reliable Actisense solutions. The winter break is ideal for resolving unstable connections, setting up data logging, or properly labeling and documenting the backbone.

  • Termination: Exactly two terminators, at either end of the backbone.
  • Power-in: For longer backbones, power at a logical point. Prevent voltage drops.
  • Document: photos and a diagram; label the backbone, drops, and power supply.

Is this the time for an upgrade?

If your boat is stationary, you can make improvements at your leisure. Consider a larger plotter screen, additional displays in the cockpit, an AIS transponder, or a backbone ready for future sensors and apps. We'll help you develop a setup that suits your sailing area and plans.

When to do it yourself and when not?

You can perform many checks yourself. Are there persistent problems, or are you unsure about the power supply and network health? Have it tested once. We work according to NMEA guidelines and quickly identify the cause.
